DANA POINT – Dana Hills’ cross country program has seen many a day in the sun.
Beginning the season ranked No. 1 in the CIF-State Division 1 boys rankings, the early signs were that trend would continue.
And it has.
Sophomore Jack Landgraf ran a lifetime-best 14:28 to win the boys sweepstakes race of the 42nd Dana Hills Invitational Saturday morning at Dana Hills High.
Landgraf’s time tied Ricardo Campuzano (2010) for the second-best mark in Dana Hills’ history on a 3-mile course. Tyler Valdes set the record of 14:25 in 2008.
Landgraf was being tailed by Venice’s Paul Luevano in the last 400 meters, but his final kick in the last 100 sealed his victory. He said the team emphasized performing well in its first opportunity to compete against elite competition this year.
“This race is a good learning point,” said Landgraf, who set a personal record by 30 seconds. “Everyone was pushing. We knew that we had to kill it.”
Landgraf takes over Jake Ogden’s sophomore school record. Ogden ran a 14:57 as a sophomore in 2013.
The Dolphins were equally impressive as a team in defeating Temecula Great Oak, 29-57. Mason Coppi, Thomas Wilfert, Colin Stein, and Brandon Hough joined Landgraf beneath the 15-minute threshold. They are the first Dana Hills squad to have the entire scoring quintet run sub-15-minute times. It is also the third fastest team time (1:14:14) in school history.
“Our gap narrowed,” Dolphins coach Tim Butler said. “I understand that it will probably widen as we go to a harder course, but this was a huge step for our team if we’re going to compete with Great Oak.
“What I was stoked about was getting five guys under 15 (minutes). I couldn’t be any happier with our gap.”
Huntington Beach’s Cassie Durgy posted the county’s top time in the girls sweepstakes race. She placed fourth with a 17:22. Dana Hills’ Camille Perkins placed sixth (17:41).
A strong crop of county newcomers made their mark in the freshman races. Lars Mitchel (16:06) added to a big day for Huntington Beach cross country with a victory in the Division 1 freshman race.
San Juan Hills’ Daniel White set the freshman meet record in Division 2 with a time of 15:28. White said it is important for him to play the frontrunner.
“I push my pace through the run and try to keep it through the finish,” White said. “I don’t have the greatest kick, but I try to go out strong and stay strong.”
Mission Viejo pushed across four of the top five freshmen in Division 2. Kelli Hines (18:04) was the winner, with Morgan Calcagnie, Emma Hicken, and Lauryn Simons right behind her.
Ocean View seniors Eric Jimenez (15:45) and Julie Vargas (19:13) won their Division 3 races.
