BUENA PARK – Sunny Hills junior running back Brandon Castelo rushed for 199 and two touchdowns on 10 carries to lead the Lancers over Godinez, 16-13, Friday night at Buena Park High.

Castelo missed last week’s game against Rubidoux with an injury and hadn’t played since the first quarter of Week 0. On his first carry, he ran down the right side for 54 yards and a touchdown. He then ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter.

On the first play of the second half, Castelo scored on a 62-yard run on the first play of the second half, with David Cabral’s two-point conversion run extending Sunny Hills’ lead to 16-6.

“It was great to see him breaking off runs,” Sunny Hills coach Pete Karavedas said of Castelo.

Godinez (1-1) went three-and-out on its next possession but took advantage of a muffed punt at the Sunny Hills 9 to regain possession. Running back Hector Duarte scored on the next play to pull the Grizzlies within 16-13.

The Lancers (2-1) sealed the win when the Grizzlies turned the ball over on downs with 1:15 left as Bryan Ibarra’s pass was broken up by Malcolm Dixon.

Godinez was led by Andy Sosa, who rushed for 58 yards on nine carries.
