Sunny Hills boys golf coach Tim Devaney climbed out of his golf cart at La Habra’s Hacienda Country Club, glanced at a scorecard and said, “It looks like we have finally got a rivalry going.”

For more than a decade, Sunny Hills faced little resistance in the Freeway League. Its only real tests came during the CIF postseason. In league, a victory was almost guaranteed for the Lancers.

But times are changing. Troy proved that Thursday, beating the No. 7 Lancers, 192-198.

It was an historic result for the Warriors. Troy has been playing Sunny Hills since 2004, a span of 24 matches, and this was the Warriors’ first triumph against the Lancers. The victory also ensured that Troy will share the league championship with Sunny Hills.

Robert Lee led the Warriors (14-5, 9-1) by medaling for the third time this season with his first sub-par round at Hacienda. The junior finished with one birdie and no bogeys on the front nine to post a 1-under 34.

“Ever since my freshman year when we played them, we never had a chance,” Lee said. “This feels good, knowing that we will always be known as the first to beat them.

“We are able to bring out the best in each other. We have more confidence, and we aren’t afraid of Sunny Hills anymore.”

Troy’s Joseph Crisostomo needed only 12 putts to complete his round and shoot a 1-over 36. He had six one putts.

Justin Kim led Sunny Hills (9-1) with a 36.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 2 Woodbridge 183, No. 4 Beckman 189: Hide Yoshihara posted a 4-under-par 32 at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course to lead the Warriors (16-1, 9-1).
