Lauren Marin was in the right place at the right time for the Laguna Hills girls soccer team.

The senior forward followed up a rebound of a Rebecca Chavez shot and slipped the ball into the net in overtime to give the visiting Hawks a 1-0 victory over Edison in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs Tuesday.

The Hawks (18-2-1) will face Los Osos in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The site will be announced today.

“It all happened pretty fast,” Marin said. “I was there for the rebound. We possessed (the ball) like we always do, and we tried to find the wings to bring it (the ball) inside.

“I think we did the well and we kept attacking and we were relentless.”

The game was scoreless after 80 minutes sending the game in overtime.

Marin’s goal came late in the first overtime period.

“Their keeper (Zoe Clevely) is outstanding,” Laguna Hills coach Kevin Macare said of the Chargers (13-4-6). “We knew we had to find a way around her or hit it hard enough where she couldn’t hold on to it.

“We finally got one of those and we were able to finish it. It was a matter or persistence.”

The Hawks entered the contest having allowed two goals in their previous five games, and the Chargers had allowed three in their previous six.

Both teams had decent opportunities to score early in the game, but in the end, it was the Hawks’ possession that helped decide the outcome.

“In the second half that’s what we focused on,” Macare said, “just keeping possession, trying to move the ball around, taking advantage of our speed, and we weren’t doing that in the first half.”
