DANA POINT — Chino ace Miranda Viramontes eliminated Trabuco Hills from the CIF-SS softball playoffs on Tuesday with a no-hitter.
She had the same fate in mind for Dana Hills on Thursday, but the Dolphins were able to avoid being another team on Viramontes’ no-hit list.
Unfortunately though, Dana Hills wasn’t able to escape defeat.
Viramontes stymied the Dana Hills bats en route to a complete game one-hit shutout, ending the Dolphins season, 10-0, in a CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinal game at Dana Hills High.
Dana Hills coach Margo Botelho said that her team had an interesting journey this season, one that is very promising for the future.

“We’ve had an up and down season,” she said. “We’d play really well, and then we’d have a few days in between, like this, where things kind of just went wrong.”
Viramontes held Dana Hills (12-14) hitless until Samantha Schwartz broke up Chino’s no-hit bid with a two-out single in the seventh.
After Schwartz’s single, Frankie Tago and Grace Roman drew back-to-back walks, giving the Dolphins their first scoring threat of the game.
Viramontes settled down, however, and got Kat Abramek to ground out to end the game.
Chino (24-2) scored first in the second inning after a single to left from Ruby Barroso and a bunt single from Alyssa Gonzalez put runners in scoring position.
Viramontes then grounded a ball back to Dana Hills starter Lindsey Cassidy, scoring both Barroso and Gonzalez on a throwing error from Cassidy.
Chino scored three runs in the second, added four in the fourth and finished the game off with three in the fifth.
Botelho said the errors committed by her team were uncharacteristic and had an impact on the flow of the game early on.
“Typically we do not make errors like that,” she said. “We knew they had a great pitcher, but what I didn’t expect were the defensive errors.”
Dana Hills defeated Mayfair of Lakewood and South Hills of West Covina to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinal game, and Botelho said that she is optimistic about next season.
“We feel like we’ll have a really strong team next year,” she said. “We have most of our starters coming back and I’m really excited.”
