Corona del Mar boys golf coach Mike Starkweather went to El Niguel Country Club on Thursday looking to exact some revenge on Dana Hills. Instead, he left the nonleague match with his second loss this week to the No. 9 Dolphins.

Freshman Tanner Podres shot 2-over-par 38 and help the Dolphins edge the No. 2 Sea Kings by two strokes, 200-202. On Monday, Dana Hills (6-4) beat Corona del Mar by three strokes, ending he Sea Kings’ 45-match winning streak that began in the 2011 season.  

Podres took slightly more than three strokes off his nine-hole scoring average on Thursday. His freshman teammate Clay Feagler, the Dolphins No. 1 who has medaled five times this season, carded a 3-over 39.

“You rarely find freshmen that play at this high level. Normally, at least through the sophomore level they continue to develop,” Dana Hills coach Phil Wilburton said. “They might make the varsity team, but they aren’t going to be your No. 1 player.”

The No. 2 Sea Kings (7-2) posted their second highest score of the season on Monday and have finished above 200 in two of their last three matches.

 “I can’t believe it. I thought they wanted it badly. They are better than this,” Starkweather said. “I hate to say this, but we are vulnerable now. That score was horrible.”

Chase Wheatley, who was 7-under par through his first six matches this season, posted a 3-over 39 on Thursday and was one of just two Sea Kings to come in under 40.

“This validates it (the victory on Monday),” Wilburton said. “This is huge for next week when we start league. When you take down the second-best team in the county twice, it does nothing but build our confidence.”

In other nonleague boys golf:

No. 4 Marina 186, Downey 228: Nick Swanson carded a 1-under 34 at Meadowlark Golf Course for the Vikings (8-1).

Santa Margarita 182, No. 3 Tesoro 192: Matt Murphy fired a 3-under 33 on the South Course at Coto de Caza to lead the Eagles (2-2).

In the Trinity League

No. 1 Servite 191, Orange Lutheran 206: Brandon Brame posted a 1-over-par 36 at Western Hills Country Club to lead the Friars (6-0, 3-0).
