Laguna Hills regroups at Mann Classic

ORANGE – Days after a heartbreaking South Coast League dual loss, the Laguna Hills wrestling team looked to regroup at the Mann Classic.

That's exactly what happened.

The Hawks recorded 273.5 points, 120 ahead of second-place Dana Hills, and finished with 11 medalists as the tournament concluded Saturday at Santiago Canyon College.

"After the loss (to San Clemente on Tuesday) the next day, we all sat down, we had a good discussion about it; there were some kids that actually got up and spoke," Laguna Hills coach Cliff Jarmie said. "Andre (Cabrera) got up and said, 'I thought this (that loss) was my fault. We need to move forward from here as a team'

"He couldn't have said it any better. Everybody kind of rallied around that, had good practices; we have good assistants working with the kids, and things kind of turned themselves around, and I think we've got a nice focus on the future."

The Hawks certainly listened to Cabrera's words and actions. Cabrera (152), Martin Garcia (106) and Wyond Mills (145) won individual titles.

Mills was the Lower Weight MVP, winning five matches by fall and another by decision.

"He looked in his groove today," Jarmie said of Mills. "He did a very nice job."

Mills defeated Fountain Valley's Steele Escobedo, 3-2, in the finals.

Joe Applegate (160), Peter Eggert (220) and Jose Ballesteros (285) were all finalists, eventually finishing second at their weights.

Dana Hills finished with seven medalists, including Dalton DuCasse, who was a champion at 220 pounds.

"If you would have asked me Friday, I wouldn't have thought we could have finished second," Dana Hills coach Reza Abedi said. "We had three guys out of the lineup. ... I just didn't think we had the full force to perform this well, but it is great for us."

Other county individual champions included Luis Ortiz (Magnolia, 113), Jonathon Fraser (Edison, 170), Johnny Beltran (Servite, 182), Mason Kumashiro (Los Alamitos, 195) and Alejandro Ruelas (Westminster, 285).

Servite finished third and Fountain Valley fourth in the team standings.

Westminster was eighth. The Lions had five medalists.
