LA HABRA – La Habra jumped out to a 21-point first-quarter lead and went on to defeat Sunny Hills, 49-14, on Friday night in a Freeway League game at La Habra High.

The Highlanders (5-3, 3-0) also went on a 21-0 run in the second quarter to build a 42-6 lead at halftime against the Lancers (5-3, 0-3).

The Highlanders took a 14-0 lead behind two touchdown runs – 5 and 15 yards – by running back Carlos Martin.

The Lancers (5-3, 0-3) finally got on the scoreboard on the first of two touchdown runs by Joe Ha to make the score 21-6 in the second quarter.

The Highlanders responded with another touchdown drive. Quarterback Eric Barriere drove the Highlanders 65 yards in only 36 seconds, finishing the drive with a 22-yard scoring pass to Amon Fellows.

The Highlanders’ quick-strike offense was back for another score on their next drive.

They needed only 1:07 to go 64 yards as Barriere concluded the drive with a 9-yard scoring run that saw him escape several defenders behind the line of scrimmage before racing into the end zone.

The Highlanders finished the first half by going 70 yards in 1:36, and Stephen Gichuru scored on a 35-yard run to make the score 42-6 at the half.

The Highlanders defense held the Lancers to 67 yards of total offense while also intercepting two passes, one which Trevor Casados returned for a touchdown in the first quarter.

La Habra will face Troy (6-2, 2-1) on Thursday at Fullerton High.
