BOYS WRESTLING

The CIF-SS Individual Championships start Friday at 11 a.m. at six locations:

• Inland Division finals at Temecula Valley High;

• Coastal Divison at Lakeside High of Lake Elsinore;

• Northern Division at Santa Maria High;

• Eastern Division at Ayala High of Chino Hills;

• Southern Division at Marina High;

• Central Division at Grand Terrace High.

Wrestling resumes Saturday at 11 a.m., with the finals slated for 5 p.m.

The top five wrestlers at each weight class advance to next week’s CIF-SS Masters Meet.

GIRLS WRESTLING

If Saturday was any indication, the 126-pound weight class at the girls CIF State Tournament will be one to watch.

In a span of a couple of rounds, big moves were made. Santa Monica’s Maddy Tung pinned Valencia’s Gabby Garcia in the semifinals. Kennedy’s Miyuki Pugrad then pinned Tung in the finals.

In the consolation bracket, Garcia won her final two matches by fall to finish third.

“She might be the No. 1 seed,” Kennedy coach Mike Kim of Pugrad. We will have to wait until the outcome from up north. There are so many tough girls.

“I still think, Maddy (Tung), Gabby (Garcia) and Miyuki are the top three.”

Pugrad has two victories over Tung. Garcia has only faced Tung once. Their paths could cross again during the state tournament Feb. 27-28.

Pugrad, a junior, will be making her third state apperance. She will be joined by sophomore teammate Kayla Czelusniak (131).

“She knows what to expect,” Kim said of Pugrad. “She’s matured a lot and she’s more prepared and she’s sharing that knowledge with Kayla, so she won’t get surprised.”
