PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Mayo Hibi, Woodbridge, Fr.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Kristen Case, Newport Harbor

Case, a 2000 graduate of Newport Harbor, guided her alma mater to its first CIF championship match since 2001. The team also captured its third consecutive Sunset League title and was ranked as high as No. 6 in Orange County and No. 2 in the CIF-SS Division 2 poll. Case played collegiately at Cal and uses her experience in coaching the Sailors. “My girls would say I'm big on work ethic, believe in hard work and a positive attitude,” she said. For her efforts, Case is the 2010 Register’s Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.

ALL-COUNTY FIRST TEAM

Lynda Xepoleas, Corona del Mar, Sr.

In her first season of high school tennis, Xepoleas displayed the type of talent from someone ranked in the top 10 nationally. She was the Sea Kings No. 1 singles player, first-team Pacific Coast League, reached the semifinals of the CIF-SS individual singles championship and finished 33-4 overall.

Alyssa Smith, Dana Hills, Soph.

Alyssa Smith ended the year 24-4 in singles, with only one loss coming to a county player (Mayo Hibi). She was the No. 2 singles player on the top-ranked team in the county, and was selected to the South Coast League’s first team. She also went 5-0 in doubles.

Joanna Smith, Dana Hills, Sr.

Joanna Smith showed her toughness by playing part of the season with a cast on her left wrist. She still managed a 27-4 singles and 7-0 doubles record. She was the No. 1 singles player for the top-ranked Dolphins and winner of the South Coast League singles tournament. She also reached the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS individual singles championship.

Cassidy Spearman, Dana Hills, Soph.

Spearman provided the versatility a team like Dana Hills needs. She went 17-0 in singles and 19-3 in doubles. She captured the South Coast League doubles title with Jessica Perez. The pair also made it to the semifinals of the CIF-SS doubles championships.

Jessica Perez, Dana Hills, Soph.

Perez posted a 19-3 singles and 19-2 doubles record. Playing with Cassidy Spearman, she won the South Coast League doubles title and reached the semifinals of the CIF-SS doubles championship.

Kyra Scott, University, Jr.

Scott was a valuable member to the Trojans tennis team as she had the ability to play both singles and doubles. She was selected to the first-team Pacific Coast League, winning the league doubles tournament with partner Ali Dawson. They also advanced to the CIF-SS doubles tournament semifinals.

Ali Dawson, University, Sr.

Dawson was the No. 1 singles player on the second-ranked team in the county. She teamed with Kyra Scott to win the Pacific Coast League doubles title, and went on to reach the semifinals in the CIF doubles tournament. She was also a first-team all-league selection.

Sophia Bott, San Clemente, Jr.

Bott was San Clemente’s No. 1 singles player and a member of the South Coast League’s first team. She finished runner up in the league singles tournament and made the Round of 16 of the CIF-SS individual singles championships to go 47-7 on the season.

Taylor Nederlander, Laguna Beach, Soph.

Nederlander made one of the biggest improvements this season and earned notable victories, such as the one over Dana Hills’ Joanna Smith. Nederlander captured the Orange Coast League singles championship and was the league’s MVP.
