WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Edison football team beat Baldwin, 49-10, on the island of Maui in its season opener Saturday night.

The Chargers took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter with three long touchdown passes by Matt Gane – 49 and 42 yards to Jake Favreau and 37 yards to Jacob Price.

The Edison defense forced three-and-outs on the first three possessions – the Bears’ first first down came on a facemask penalty.

Edison outgained the Bears 180 yards to 19 in the first quarter and 317 to 45 in the first half while piling up a 35-3 lead. The final numbers were 437 yards for Edison to 111 for Baldwin, the nine-time defending Maui Interscholastic League Division I champions.

“We have a lot of new kids and we weren’t really sure how we were going to be, but our passing attack looked pretty good tonight …,” said Edison coach Dave White, who also praised his team’s defense.

“I think they (Edison’s players) were just tired of hitting each other (in practice), and playing somebody new, we wanted to come over and try to get a win.”

Gane, who was replaced late in the half by Grant Lowary, was 7 for 11 passing for 185 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Gane also ran eight times for 51 yards and a score.

Favreau caught seven passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns in the game – his final scoring grab of 13 yards from Lowary made it 42-3 and turned on the 35-point mercy-rule running clock with 5 minutes, 12 seconds left in the third quarter.

Third-string quarterback Bowen Blake hit Braydon Wilson with a 3-yard scoring pass with 8:52 to go to make it 49-3.

Lowary finished 8 for 14 for 119 yards and two touchdowns. The Chargers’ leading rusher was Jacob Marines, who had 58 yards on 11 carries.
