Division 1 boys water polo rivals Mater Dei and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City remained on a collision course Saturday at the California State High School Championships.
Last season’s Division 1 finalists each won twice to cruise into Sunday’s semifinals at Foothill.
Day 1: Newport jolted by Lynn’s club departure
Mater Dei, last season’s Division 1 runner-up, beat Division 1-bound Agoura, 13-6, and Northern California’s Miramonte, 17-8.
Reigning Division 1 champion and defending tournament champion Harvard-Westlake defeated Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga, 17-5, and Newport Harbor, 16-2.
In the semifinals Sunday, Mater Dei takes on Laguna Beach at 11 a.m. at Foothill while Harvard-Westlake plays Foothill at 10 a.m.
The Division 3 Breakers edged Division 1 contender Loyola of Los Angeles in a shootout Saturday to reach the semifinals while Foothill edged Huntington Beach, 16-15.
The boys final at Foothill is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Corona del Mar will play host to the girls semifinals Sunday.
The Sea Queens will take on Foothill in the first semifinal at 10 a.m. while defending Division 1 champion Laguna Beach plays San Marcos in the second semifinal at 11 a.m.
San Marcos beat rising Orange Lutheran, 9-7, Saturday to reach the semifinals. Foothill advanced to the semifinals with an 8-6 victory against Newport Harbor, which beat the Knights in the Division 1 quarterfinals last season.
The girls championship is set for 3 p.m. at Corona del Mar.
