ALISO VIEJO – Sixth-ranked Aliso Niguel put together its best first half of the season and kept Downey hemmed in its own half of the field for a nonleague win, 4-0, at Aliso Niguel High on Wednesday.

“Our front six is very powerful,” Aliso Niguel coach Randy Dodge said. “We can keep you pinned for such a long time and we run so many good front runners that it’s tough for teams.”

Aliso Niguel (7-0-1) controlled off the hop and got the advantage over Downey (1-5-1) in the seventh minute.

Bella Folino battled through several defenders, thumping the ball into their shin guards, and came out the other side with the ball and shot at the net.

“It was me versus the whole back line,” Folino said. “I had to just preserve through and just hit it in.”

Folino tallied another in the 15th minute.

Madelyn Desiano pushed through on the left flank and collected the ball on the endline.

Desiano sent the ball in front to Folino who settled and put a shot through on the near side.

The Wolverines put in their third as Kellie Sugihara sent a left-side corner to the far post. Olivia Abrecht headed the ball down and across the net for the 3-0 score 35 minutes in.

Aliso Niguel held Downey without a shot on target, and Sydney Gibson put in the Wolverine’s fourth goal off an Audrey McKeon cross in the 76th minute.

“Our crossing was on point,” Dodge said. “We’ve been working on a lot of services for our front runners. We created some really good chances. We’ve been trying to execute technically, and that’s what we did tonight.”
