LA HABRA – Eric Barriere threw a school-record seven touchdown passes to lift La Habra past Sonora, 56-26, in a Freeway League game Friday night at La Habra High.
The junior quarterback completed 12 of 19 passes for 221 yards. He also ran for 54 yards on 11 carries.
“Eric was on fire,” said La Habra running back Carlos Martin, who gained 108 yards on 11 carries including a 57-yard touchdown. “He’s phenomenal.”
La Habra (7-3, 5-0) won its 40th straight league game and eighth consecutive title.
“Eric was awesome,” La Habra coach Frank Mazzotta said. “He’s a special kid. He’s really a good manager of the game.”
Barriere threw touchdowns of 46, 10 and 35 yards to Justin Sun, 5 and 3 to Edrick Flores, 35 to Stephen Gichuru and 10 to Amon Fellows.
Sonora’s Jacob Fimbres scored touchdowns on 15-, 4- and 5-yard runs. Orange County’s leading ground gainer going into the game had 167 yards on 26 carries.
Quarterback Cole McDonald had a 52-yard touchdown run for Sonora (6-4, 1-4) to tie the game at 7-7 and had 69 yards on nine carries. He completed 10 of 25 passes with one interception for 156 yards.
Mazzotta likes where La Habra is entering the CIF-SS playoffs next week.
“We’re getting better, we’re pretty good,” he said. “We need to keep getting better, but this is a good time to be getting better.”
Barriere hooked up with Sun for their first touchdown with 6:06 left in the first quarter. He continued to toss TD passes and Martin broke loose for his 57-yard scoring run in the second quarter to lift La Habra to a 35-7 lead at the half.
