LA HABRA – Despite losing three nonleague games, La Habra proved it could still move the ball and score against worthy opponents on Friday night.

The Highlanders showcased their powerful offense as they cruised to a 42-7 Freeway League victory over Fullerton at La Habra High.

La Habra (4-3, 2-0) won its third consecutive game and remained in the driver’s seat in its quest for its eighth consecutive league title.

Carlos Martin scored three touchdowns and quarterback Eric Barriere threw two touchdown passes to pace La Habra. Martin rushed for 156 yards to push his season total to 1,073 and his touchdown total to 19.

La Habra had four scoring drives, including two covering 90 yards or more, in the first half and built a 35-7 advantage before the break.

Barriere gave La Habra a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run. Following a Fullerton touchdown, Barriere connected on a 17-yard scoring pass to Martin.

With less than three minutes to play in the half, Martin caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Barriere. Barriere then tossed his second touchdown pass of the game in the final minute of the half to Amon Fellows.

“Each week, we’re improving and it felt great to drive down the field, execute and complete passes,” said Barriere, who completed 12 of 20 passes for 185 yards.

“It’s a nice league win and playing those tough teams made us stronger,” said Martin.

Fullerton (3-4, 0-2) was dealt a blow when leading rusher Joshua Hill was unable to play because of a right leg injury he sustained last week against Troy.
