GARDEN GROVE – Garden Grove’s quest for a sixth consecutive league championship stayed intact as it defeated Rancho Alamitos, 33-15, Thursday night at Garden Grove High.

The Argonauts (6-2, 3-0) pulled away in the second half with the explosive play of Devan Rouse and Dominik Sanchez and they remain unbeaten in Garden Grove League play while extending their win streak over Rancho Alamitos to five games.

Rouse caught five balls for 107 yards and was a threat to the Vaqueros (4-4, 1-2) all night.

Quarterback Ruben Mendoza passed for 214 yards and two TDs, and Sanchez wore down the defense with 108 rushing yards and one score.

After its first two possessions yielded a punt and an interception, Garden Grove finally got on track by stringing together some first downs on its third drive. Mario Moemoe scored from 6 yards out to give the Argonauts a 6-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Brandon Coleman blocked a punt, which gave Garden Grove a short field to work with. Later, Coleman’s fourth-down TD catch made it 12-0 on Mendoza’s pass to the corner of the end zone.

Adam Johnson added a 10-yard TD catch in the third and Rancho Alamitos used a Victor Mendoza fumble recovery to set up their first touchdown, a Cristian Villareal catch that made it 19-9 early in the fourth quarter.
