Garden Grove quarterback Angel Martinez runs with the ball during Friday's nonleague game against Pacifica.

Garden Grove runs to victory behind Masoe

GARDEN GROVE – Sione Masoe ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and unbeaten Garden Grove blew past Pacifica, 47-27, Friday night in a nonleague game at Garden Grove High.

The Argonauts (3-0) dominated the line of scrimmage for 387 rushing yards. Vincent Luna assisted Masoe with 92 yards on the ground to go with a pair of touchdowns.

Garden Grove never trailed in Friday's homecoming game, but Pacifica (1-3) was prepared to give the Argonauts a challenge.

After falling behind, 14-0, after the first quarter, Pacifica's defense forced a fumble, and Chuck Nava picked it up and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown.

Garden Grove quarterback Angel Martinez was quick to respond. The Argonauts drove 75 yards on the next drive, and Martinez found Alejandro Ceja at the left pylon for a 13-yard touchdown catch.

Garden Grove continued its scoring surge by rattling off 19 unanswered points in a span of 4:26. Luna and Austin Christian added short running touchdowns to follow Ceja's end-zone trip.

The Mariners came back right before the half. Nick Howard threw his first touchdown of the night on a deep pass to Travis Hadden. Hadden fought off a defender in the end zone, before tipping the pass to himself with nine seconds remaining in the quarter.

Garden Grove led, 33-13, at halftime.

Each team scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half, with Garden Grove twice building its lead back up to four possessions.

Charlie Shuffler and Avery Watson had the scores for Pacifica.

Watson's 5-yard run made it 47-27. Trever Brown had 71 rushing yards for Pacifica.
