OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
LOS ALAMITOS GRIFFINS
Coach: John Barnes
Last season: 9-2 overall, 5-0 league
Scouting report: The defending league champion Griffins are loaded on offense with seven returning starters, including quarterback Jack Telenko, the reigning offensive back of the year in the Sunset. Jacob Gasser, one of Telenko’s top receivers last season, also returns along with standout offensive linemen Jacob Keller and Sean Tulette. The Griffins also return running backs Schuyler Whitehead (6-2, 198), Keynin Charbonnet (6-2, 197) and Darien Cornay and add Estancia transfer Dylan Laurent to the mix. Emerging junior tight end Drew Platt is another intriguing weapon. Los Alamitos returns four starters on defense. The Griffins might be inexperienced at some spots such as linebacker, but they like their talent. Will Armstrong moves from defensive end to middle linebacker to replace county defensive player of the year Matt Locher, who is now at Boise State.
Bottom line: The Griffins are the near-unanimous favorite in the Sunset and they cherish league titles. Los Al knows it will be judged more by the postseason, which ended with a first-round upset last season against El Toro.
Players to watch: Darien Cornay, CB/RB, Sr.; Jacob Gasser, WR, Sr.; Jacob Keller, OL, Sr.; Jack Telenko, QB, Sr.; Sean Tulette, OL, Sr.; Schuyler Whitehead, RB/S, Sr.
