Ex-Edison standout Tom Shields became a gold medalist at the Rio Olympics on Saturday.

The Cal-based swimmer earned a gold medal in the men’s 400-meter medley relay for racing in prelims of the event on Friday.

The swimmers in prelims receive medals for their efforts, which qualify their countries for finals. Michael Phelps and Co. captured the medley relay in finals Saturday.

Shields, 25, was a first-time Olympian in Rio. He finished second to Phelps in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the U.S. Olympics Trials earlier this summer.
