PLACENTIA – With a chance to clinch a share of the Century League championship, El Dorado didn’t exactly set the world on fire with its play in the opening set of its match against Canyon.

After dropping the first set to the Comanches on Tuesday night, the Golden Hawks rallied for a 3-1 victory, 24-26, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21, at El Dorado to clinch its share of the Century League title.

El Dorado (15-9, 9-3) will share the league championship with Villa Park.

“It was great,” Golden Hawks coach Craig Tefertiller said about clinching a piece of the league championship. “This group overcame some adversity with injuries and youthfulness, and we did a nice job. They hung together and they earned it.”

Leading, 18-11, in the fourth set, it appeared as if El Dorado was going to run away with the victory. Canyon didn’t go down easily, though.

The Comanches scored seven of the next nine points in the set to put some pressure on the Golden Hawks. But Kelly Claes helped El Dorado close out the set and claim the match, 25-21.

“(It was) amazing,” Claes said about the triumph. “Now we’re first with Villa Park. Now it’s 10 years in a row we’re Century League champions, that’s amazing.”

Claes led the Golden Hawks in kills with 21, and assists with 18. Alex Gresham did her part by totaling 16 kills and three blocks.

Kristen Fox did a fine job of setting up her teammates with 14 assists.

Despite losing the opening set, El Dorado set the tone for the rest of the match in the very next set by dominating Canyon, 25-13. The Golden Hawks never trailed in the set and played from ahead for the majority of the match following that point.
