SANTA ANA – The lights were still shining bright over the field in the moments that followed the Godinez-Estancia football game Friday night. But they didn’t have to be — the bright smiles of the Godinez players and coaches were enough to illuminate the north end of the field where the Grizzlies gathered.

The smiles were deserved as Godinez clinched its first outright league championship with a decisive 42-6 triumph over Estancia in a Orange Coast League game at Santa Ana Valley High.

“This feels great,” said Grizzlies coach Michael Echaves.following a Gatorade shower given to him by his players. “I can’t be more proud of the kids.”

Despite committing 12 penalties for 100 yards, Godinez was dominant from start to finish in recording its fifth consecutive victory. The Grizllies outgained the Eagles in total yards, 383-107.

Running backs Gerson Lopez (12 carries, 158 yards) and Patrick McMorris (19 carries, 84 yards) led the charge for the Grizllies (6-4, 5-0), combining for 242 of the team’s 320 rushing yards.

Godinez junior Andy Sosa scored 24 points on two rushing touchdowns and six PATs.

The game was delayed for over 20 minutes when Godinez senior Adolfo Del real suffered a leg injury during the opening kickoff of the second half. He was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Irvine with a dislocated knee cap.

Estancia finished 2-8 and 1-4.

Estancia’s lone highlight of the night was a 50-yard field goal by Andy Martinez.
