Senior Thea Elkhouri scored three goals and Ava Mattis and Megan O’Malley each added two to help Troy’s girls water polo team open defense of its Freeway League title with a 9-7 victory against La Habra at Fullerton College on Wednesday night.

The Warriors (7-3, 1-0) have won 51 consecutive league matches since dropping a Freeway match against Sunny Hills in 2011.

Jessica Calderon netted three goals for La Habra (4-10, 0-1) while Natasha Velez added two.

In other Freeway League openers, Buena Park beat Sonora, 10-3, and Fullerton surprised Sunny Hills, 9-7.

Newport Harbor 22, Edison 2: Jessica Lynch scored seven goals and Anne Rankin collected four goals and five steals to help the host Sailors (8-4, 1-0) snap a three-game losing streak.

Los Alamitos 22, Marina 3: Katie Dvonch scored five goals and added two assists and two steals for the Griffins (8-4, 1-0) at Newport Harbor.

Huntington Beach 24, Fountain Valley 2: Courtney Heydorff scored five goals for the Oilers (9-1, 1-0) at Newport Harbor.

The average margin of victory in the Sunset was 20.3 goals on Wednesday.
