Fifth-ranked Newport Harbor and No. 4 Corona del Mar will renew their rivalry Friday with a new but familiar face expected on the Sailors’ bench.

Former Edison coach Diggy Riley is a first-year assistant at Newport Harbor under Coach Brian Melstrom.

The teams’ annual nonleague match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

Riley coached against Newport Harbor for many seasons but also is a graduate from the school.

He said the Sailors reached out to him about being an assistant.

“I have no intention of wanting to be a head coach anymore, and going back to my alma mater as an assistant coach seemed a perfect fit,” Riley said in an email. “I coached with them all summer and fall just to make sure this is where I wanted to be.”

Foothill boys soccer coach David Arvizu might want to call Los Alamitos coach Donavan Martinez before the Knights play No. 1 Godinez on Wednesday at Centennial Park because the Griffins were able to do something no other team has been able to do this season.

The Grizzlies have played eight games, and only once have they been held to fewer than two goals. It happened when Godinez played the Griffins in the semifinals of the Aliso Cup tournament earlier this month.

The undefeated Grizzlies scored eight goals last week in beating Segerstrom and Santiago, scoring six goals against the Jaguars. Twice Godinez scored four goals, and they opened the season beating Dana Hills, 5-1.

Through their first eight games, the Grizzlies have scored 27 goals, giving them a 3.37 goals per game average.

What makes them so difficult to defend is the number of weapons they have. Eight players have scored for the Grizzlies. Bryan Ibarra leads the team with nine goals.

Cesar Martinez and Alexis Palacios have each knocked in four. Erick Pineda and Jose Macias have both scored three. Roberto Arzate follows with two goals while Andy Sosa and Oscar Salas have one goal apiece.
