Sam Sasaki scored three goals, including the winner with 1:06 left in the fourth period, to lift Orange Lutheran’s top-ranked boys water polo team over Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton, 11-10, in the final of the Memorial Cup on Saturday night in San Jose.
The Lancers (19-2) sealed the title, and a rally from an early 3-0 deficit, by fighting off a power play by Sacred Heart Prep in the final minute.
Hannes Daube and Ash Molthen each added two goals for Orange Lutheran.
In the semifinals, the Lancers defeated defending Memorial Cup champion Foothill, 9-7. Molthen racked up four goals and two assists in the victory while goalie Jake Simmons added eight saves.
Joe Molina netted four goals for No. 5 Foothill while goalie Arash Izadmanesh made 10 saves.
In the third-place match:
Foothill 6, Bellarmine 4: JJ Hornecker and Molina scored two goals apiece and Izadmanesh had nine saves to pace the Knights.
In the fifth-place match:
No. 6 Newport Harbor 8, No. 3 Corona del Mar 7: Freshman Makoto Kenney drew an exclusion with seven seconds left and Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored the winner with four seconds remaining to lift the Sailors (16-7), who lost to the Sea Kings on Oct. 1.
