Foothill’s third-ranked girls water polo team opened its season with a challenge Saturday and came away with a split.

The Knights traveled to Dos Pueblos of Goleta for two matches against fellow CIF-SS Division 1 contenders.

Foothill fell to San Marcos, 7-5, but rebounded to beat Dos Pueblos, 12-8.

“To me, it’s a great test,” Foothill coach Jim Brumm said.

Valerie Ayala scored three goals for the Knights (1-1) against San Marcos while Brooke Maxson and Hannah Bradley each added once.

In the Benson Cup:

Mission Viejo 12, Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach 8: Skylar Newhouser scored five goals and Emilee Feilmeier added four to lead the Diablos in the third-place game at El Dorado. Tiffany Sims added nine saves.

Mission Viejo lost to La Jolla, 9-4, in the semifinals.

In the Santa Ana Valley tournament:

Aliso Niguel 7, Granite Hills of El Cajon 5: The Wolverines won to finish third at Santa Ana Valley. Valhalla of El Cajon defeated Aliso Niguel, 6-4, en route to the title.

In the Don Lugo Tournament:

Marina 15, El Rancho 2: Freshman Shanna Zuanich scored seven goals at Chino to help the Vikings finish third.

In nonleague:

Coronado 9, No. 8 Newport Harbor 8 (OT): Josie Miller scored three goals for the host Sailors, who led, 7-3, going into the fourth.
