Alex Bowen scored five goals and Tony Azevedo added four as the U.S. men’s water polo team defeated Kazakhstan, 17-11, in the quarterfinals of the FINA Intercontinental Tournament at Corona del Mar on Thursday night to qualify for the Super Final in Italy in June.
The Super Final will offer the U.S. men their first opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The winner of the Super Final advances to the Olympics.
Team USA will play Australia in the semifinals Friday at 6:30 p.m. Brazil and China will play in the other semifinal at 8. China beat Canada, 11-10, in another quarterfinal.
