Ocean View’s girls water polo team showed its resiliency again Thursday night in the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.

The second-seeded Seahawks scored on their first four possessions of the fourth period to shake Santa Ynez, 10-8, in a tightly contested first-round match at Ocean View.

Ocean View (23-6) led, 5-4, going into the fourth period, but it quickly seized the momentum on a spectacular goal by Nikki Langley, who fired a shot from 8 meters in off the bottom of the crossbar 57 seconds into the quarter.

Shelby Romo added a counterattack strike about 30 seconds later, after a steal by Kari Lane, and attacker Elena Isogawa added two goals, including a well-placed lob from 8 meters.

Ocean View opened a 9-4 lead with 3:01 left and then held on behind senior goalie Alyssa Welfringer (12 saves).

“I wasn’t really concerned going into the fourth quarter with a one-goal lead,” Ocean View coach Melissa Fernandez said. “This team has really been resilient all year.”

Ocean View highlighted its regular season by rallying from a four-goal deficit against University and claiming the Golden West League title by sweeping Segerstrom, which beat the Seahawks in the CIF Division 7 final last season.

Isogawa paced Ocean View with five goals and three steals, and Leah Parlato netted five goals for Santa Ynez (17-12), a runner-up to Cabrillo of Lompoc in the Los Padres League.

Welfringer made several impresses saves in the second half.

“She saved us like she always does,” Fernandez said.
