Corona del Mar’s girls lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the first half and carried the dominance over to the second half as the Sea Kings ran away with a 16-10 victory against visiting Mission Viejo on Tuesday in the opening round of the U.S. Southern Section South Division playoffs.
Two starters – Kendall Mulvaney and Kacie Kline – had AP tests Tuesday afternoon, which caused them to enter the game late.
Kline made her presence felt when she did reach the field, as she led the team with four goals. Mulvaney scored one, and Payton Carter added three goals.
Marissa Meissner posted four goals, all in the second half, for Mission Viejo (9-8). Sam Leyds scored three times.
Sixth-seeded Corona del Mar (15-4) will face No. 3 Foothill in the second round on Thursday. The Sea Kings defeated the Knights, 16-15, last month.
Foothill beat Temecula Valley, 15-6, in its opening-round game Tuesday.
In other girls lacrosse playoff games:
No. 1 Capistrano Valley 19, No. 16 El Toro 8: Riley Eggeman had seven goals and two assists for the Cougars (16-0). Courtney Smith added six goals and an assist, and Alex Yan recorded 11 saves.
In the boys lacrosse playoffs:
No. 2 Corona del Mar 12, No. 15 Newport Harbor 3: Ben Palitz scored three goals and had two assists, and Jason Simaan won 12 of 15 face-offs to help the Sea Kings (14-1) defeat the visiting Sailors (8-9). Corona del Mar will face 10th-seeded Tesoro in the second round.
No. 3 JSerra 15, No. 14 El Toro 5: The Lions (15-4) received a balanced scoring effort led by Mitchell Kingsley, who racked up four goals and three assists. Jake Schleppy added three goals for JSerra, which will meet No. 6 St. Margaret’s in the second round Thursday.
