FIRST TEAM

HALEY WAN

Santa Margarita, Sr., Attacker

The Princeton-bound Wan delivered a rousing encore to her Register player of the year season in 2012-13. She powered the Eagles to a second consecutive CIF Division 2 crown by leading the team in goals (94), steals (75) and field blocks (37), and she added 50 assists. She also earned a second consecutive Division 2 player of the year award. Wan enhanced her reputation as a clutch performer with a school-record eight field blocks in a Trinity League-clinching victory at Mater Dei and scoring in sudden-death overtime to beat Murrieta Valley in the semifinals. “Whether it was on the offensive or defensive side … she found ways to lead,” Santa Margarita coach Brian Weathersby said. “She brought a certain toughness that we needed.”

BRIANNA DABOUB

Mater Dei, Sr., Attacker

The USC-bound sharp-shooter racked up 129 goals and 52 steals to lead Mater Dei to a third consecutive CIF Division 2 runner-up finish. Daboub scored seven goals in a semifinal victory against Montebello to finish the playoffs with 22 goals. She netted 434 goals for her career. “Daboub put her team on her back both as a leader and player,” Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman said. “As the season went along, Daboub clearly showed why she is one of the best in high school.” The All-CIF pick shared the Trinity League’s MVP with Haley Wan of Santa Margarita.

CANA MANZELLA

Foothill, Jr., Center

Manzella established herself as a force at 2 meters, racking up goals and drawing exclusions despite extra attention from defenses. “I think Cana is the best center in high school,” Laguna Beach coach Ethan Damato said during the season. Manzella overcame injuries to lead the Division 1 quarterfinalists with 54 goals, including 10 in two games against Division 1 semifinalist Los Alamitos. The Century League MVP and All-CIF pick also played strong defense.

CARLEE KAPANA

Newport Harbor, Jr., Goalie

Kapana emerged as a clutch performer in helping lead the Sailors to a third consecutive Division 1 final. She made arguably the best save of the season with a last-second block on a point-blank, redirect to preserve an 11-10 victory against Santa Barbara in the semifinals. “She’s great at reading shooters, so if you don’t set up your shot effectively, you have zero chance,” ex-Los Alamitos Dave Carlson said. Used in tandem with Harvard-bound Cleo Harrington, Kapana finished with 173 saves playing the second half of games. She was All-CIF, first team All-Sunset League and shared the outstanding goalie award with Harrington at the Irvine SoCal tournament.

BRIGETTE KIMBROUGH

San Clemente, Sr., Attacker

The San Diego State-bound Kimbrough helped power the Tritons to lofty heights before being slowed with a dislocated shoulder late in the season. Kimbrough suffered the injury Feb. 8 but netted seven goals three days later in a victory against El Toro that helped seal the South Coast League title. “I always knew she was a great player,” San Clemente coach Logan Powell said, “(but) I am now convinced that I have never coached a tougher individual.” Kimbrough scored in sudden-death overtime to help the Tritons upset then-No. 1 Foothill in a run to their first semifinal at the Santa Barbara Tournament. The South Coast League MVP led San Clemente in goals (72) and steals (77) and tied for the lead in assists (45).

MADDIE MUSSELMAN

Corona del Mar, So., Attacker

The U.S. national team player used her well-rounded skills to lead the Sea Kings to third-place finishes in all three major tournaments, the Pacific Coast League crown and the Division 1 quarterfinals. The Pacific Coast League MVP paced her team in goals (81), steals (48) and was second in assists (34). She also made one of the defensive plays of the season with a spectacular field block against Laguna Beach’s Makenzie Fischer. “She does it all,” CdM coach Ross Sinclair said of the All-CIF pick. “What makes me happy is that she’s a real selfless player. She’s so coachable and the team respects her and the opposition respects her.”
