Merritt set a national high school federation sophomore pole vault record with a meet record winning clearance of 13 feet, eight inches at the Arcadia Invitational. That clearance also set a new county record, surpassing the previous record of 13-7 set by former Newport Harbor vaulter Allison Stokke in 2007.
