ORANGE – Yorba Linda quarterback Jake Gigliotti completed 6 of 10 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries to lead the Mustangs to a 28-11 victory over El Modena in a nonleague game Thursday at El Modena High.
The Mustangs (3-2) have won three in a row after dropping the first two games.
Receiver Jeremiah Hawkins, a transfer from Servite who became eligible to play for the Mustangs this week, made an impact on the game’s first drive.
Hawkins scored on a 54-yard pass from Gigliotti, getting most of those yards on his own, to give Yorba Linda a 7-0 lead.
“He’s a neat kid and we are excited to have him on the team,” Yorba Linda coach Jeff Bailey said.
El Modena (2-3) trailed by 11 points in the third quarter, but it pulled closer with a 79-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Gramm to Patrick Marzolino.
The momentum was short-lived because on the next play from scrimmage, Gigliotti ran 60 yards for a touchdown.
Yorba Linda opens Crestview League play next week with a home game against Brea Olinda.
El Modena opens play in the North Hills League next week against Esperanza.
