Servite football coach A.J. Gass was returning to his office one day in December when he noticed a line of college coaches waiting for him.

“I walked in from my P.E. class and there were five coaches waiting,” he recalled this week.

“As I brought the first coach in and was talking to him, two more coaches walked in the door. It was a busy afternoon but well worth it because the kids work so hard, and for some of them to get the opportunity to go on and play at the next level is really important.”

Yes, college recruiters should be prepared to wait in line at Servite this spring. The Friars’ class of 2015 prospects looks as deep as any school in Orange County.

Servite wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown (6-5, 195) has racked up 11 scholarship offers, while All-County quarterback Travis Waller (6-3, 185) has four. Offensive tackle Clayton Johnston (6-6, 275) has two offers.

Gass said he has another seven juniors who he believes will attract interest from recruiters.

His list includes defensive end/linebacker Jack Savage, cornerback Maurice Davison, running back Tate Beachley, wide receiver/safety Joe Ferraro, cornerback Kameron Dennis, linebacker Justin Parcells and safety Nico Ament.

“They are definitely guys who are going to generate a lot of buzz,” Gass said. “It’s exciting.”

Gass said it’s important to him to meet with recruiters one-on-one.

“So they get a little better feeling of the type of kid we have here,” he said. “The film usually speaks for itself, but most of the time, they really want to know what type of kid they’re interested in.

“What kind of things the kid brings off the field. What he does in the classroom.”

There also is a common phrase that comes up among the recruiters, Gass said. “The Trinity League,” he said. “They all know about the Trinity League. They’ve either just come from Mater Dei, stopped at Servite, on their way to (St. John) Bosco.”
