The championship banners hanging from Rancho Alamitos’ outfield wall bothered some the Garden Grove faithful in attendance because they didn’t read “Co-Champs.”

The Argonauts and the Vaqueros have shared the Garden Grove League crown each of the past three seasons after both schools went 9-1 in league play, splitting the season series over that same time span.

After its performance Thursday afternoon, Garden Grove shouldn’t have to worry about Rancho hanging a banner after this season.

Senior leadoff hitter Kayla Cornejo went 3 for 3 at the plate, knocked in three runs and scored three more in leading the Argonauts to a 12-5 win over the host Vaqueros in a Garden Grove League showdown at Rancho Alamitos High.

“This is a big win for the girls, especially the seniors,” Argonauts coach Jasen Sutter said. “That was the first time they beat Rancho in both games. It was one of their goals this season.”

The Argonauts (12-11, 6-0) now own a two-game lead in league with four outings remaining. In their first encounters against the other Garden Grove League squads, the Argos outscored their opposition, 45-1.

Cornejo and the rest of the Garden Grove lineup came out swinging in the first inning, scoring four runs. The Argos tacked on two runs in the second and, behind Meredith Miller’s two-run home run in the third, added three runs in the third to grab a commanding 9-0 lead.

“We had a good practice yesterday, made the adjustments from the first time we played them,” Sutter added. “It was the same pitcher (Angelica Garcia) we saw in the first game. We came out and kind of jumped on them.”

The Vaqueros (6-14, 4-2) scored four runs in the third and another in the fourth, but were unable to score any additional runs off of Garden Grove’s Celeste Villagrana in the fifth, sixth or seventh.

In nonleague games:

Villa Park 3, No. 10 Yorba Linda 0: Junior Krista Dalgarn struck out seven and tossed a one-hit shutout as the Spartans (13-7) upset the visiting Mustangs (14-5) and ended the their 11-game winning streak. Amanda Campos and Shea Pone each went 2 for 3 for Villa Park.

El Modena 8, Foothill 7: Senior Marina Marzolino’s solo home run helped the Vanguards (16-7) build an early 7-0 lead. The Knights (14-10) battled back, but were unable able to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh.

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Mission Viejo 13, Dana Hills 0: Senior Taylor McQuillin earned her 95th career victory to move into third place in the CIF-SS record book for the Diablos (22-0, 5-0). The record for most career wins is 100, by Brittany Weil of Pacifica (2002-05).

McQuillin also struck out seven, giving her 1,104 for her career, which moved her to 10th on the CIF-SS allt-ime list.

Senior outfielder Alyssa Palomino hit her 14th homer of the season and Bailey Roberson slugged a grand slam for Mission Viejo.

The two home runs raise Mission Viejo’s total for the season to 36, six short of tying the CIF-SS record (42, Santiago of Corona, 2011).

In the Sunset League:

No. 8 Huntington Beach 6, Edison 3: Ivy Davis and Kristina Inouye each homered for the Oilers, who solidified their hold on second place in league.

No. 2 Los Alamitos 10, Newport Harbor 0: Senior third baseman Sally Woolpert homered and knocked in four runs for the Griffins.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 2, Troy 1 (9 innings): Senior pitcher Amanda Flores limited the Warriors to just one run in nine innings, and Shelby Ficociello drove in the winning run for the Indians.
