NEWPORT BEACH – Corona del Mar took advantage of an injury-riddled University squad Friday night, running away with a 35-0 Pacific Coast League victory at Newport Harbor High.

After his impressive performance last week, Corona del Mar (7-1, 3-0) gave sophomore quarterback Chase Garbers the start and he did not disappoint. On the Sea Kings’ first drive, Garbers completed passes of 42 and 26 yards to set up a rushing score from senior Barrett Barbato.

Garbers threw three touchdown passes in the second half. Senior Cole Collins was his primary target, catching four passes for 102 yards, including touchdowns of 47 and 11 yards on consecutive drives. With just over two minutes left in the second quarter, Garbers connected for another 11-yard score, this time to sophomore Dylan Tucker.

University (3-5, 0-3) was in dire straights from the start. Already playing without starting quarterback Wes Jordan (concussion), backup quarterback Neil Boudreau and the junior varsity quarterback also were injured. At that point, junior wide receiver Andre Campbell was tasked with playing the position.

Garbers threw his fourth touchdown pass to start the third quarter, a 5-yard toss to sophomore Billy Shaw.

“I am happy with his progress,” CdM coach Scott Meyer said of Garber, who finished 13 of 14 for 212 yards. “Coming off a great performance last week, we gave him the ball and he did a great job.”
