Softball roundup: Santa Margarita wins Savanna tourney

Santa Margarita rallied in the last three innings to beat Rosary, 4-3, in the championship game of the Savanna Tournament on Saturday night at Yorba Regional Park.

The Eagles (15-5) fell behind, 3-0, but scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and won the game between Trinity League teams by scoring two runs with two outs in the sixth, which was the last inning of the game due to a time limit.

With two outs in the sixth and runners at second and third, Sarah Cwiertnia hit a high-bouncing ground ball over the pitcher's circle that the shortstop fielded, but the hurried throw got past the first baseman. The tying run scored on Cwiertnia's infield single and the winning run scored on the overthrow, setting off a celebration on the field by the Eagles.

A sacrifice bunt by Makenna Lutterloh had allowed the Eagles' two runners to advance to second and third.

Katelyn Christensen's two-run double in the fourth to put Rosary ahead, 2-0. Earlier in the day, she hit a two-run, tiebreaking home run in a 4-2 win over California of Whittier in the semifinals.

The Royals (10-4) extened their lead to 3-0 with an unearned run in the fourth.

Cwiertnia tripled and scored on an error in the fifth to make it 3-2.

In the Savanna Tournament third-place game:

Savanna 2, California of Whittier 1: Jezabelle Quintana drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher for the Rebels, who had lost to Santa Margarita in the semifinals earlier Saturday afternoon. The Eagles used a nine-run fifth inning to beat Savanna.

In the Savanna Tournament semifinals:

Rosary 4, California 2: Katelyn Christensen broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the sixth as the Royals rallied to reach the championship game. Kolby Romaine hit a solo home run in the third for Rosary.

In other Savanna Tournament games:

Troy 3, El Rancho of Pico Rivera 2: Miranda Trinidad pitched a six-hitter and struck out five for the Warriors in the consolation championship game. Alyssa Polenta had a solo homer and two RBIs for Troy.

Aliso Niguel 2, Garden Grove 1 (8 innings): The Wolverines scored the winning run with Haeley Tran's squeeze bunt in the 13th-place game. Ashley Ruiz went the distance to pick up the victory for Aliso Niguel.
