Outlook: It’s an all-Orange County final featuring teams that play somewhat different styles. Edison is one of the county’s better outside-shooting teams. Foothill has a couple of shooters, too, but the Knights can produce points inside as well. Edison has not won a CIF-SS basketball championship. The Chargers lost to Mater Dei (featuring Miles Simon and Schea Cotton) in a 1994 CIF-SS final. This year’s Chargers, who tied Los Alamitos for the Sunset League championship, are led by 6-2 senior guard Brae Ivey who is averaging 18 points a game. AJ Garrity, a 6-3 senior, is scoring 11 points a game and 6-0 senior Jake Haar is averaging 10 points a game. Foothill won a CIF-SS boys basketball title in 2010 when Knights coach Rusty Van Cleave was county coach of the year. Foothill went 6-0 in the Crestview League to win the league championship. Also in that league are Canyon, which is playing in the 2AA championship game, and Esperanza which advanced to the 3A semifinals. Foothill’s 6-6 senior Eric Patton is averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds a game. Riley O’Hern, a 6-foot senior, is scoring 14 points a game and is the team’s top outside shooting threat. Reed Nakakihara, a 5-9 senior point guard, is averaging nine points and four assists a game. Van Cleave and Edison coach Rich Boyce were assistant coaches together at Estancia in the 1990s.
