Outlook: Corona del Mar has won five CIF-Southern Section boys basketball championships. The Sea Kings’ most recent section title was in 2007. They went undefeated in the Pacific Coast League to win the league championship and take a 15-game winning streak into this championship game. Corona del Mar is a balanced-scoring team led by 6-foot-3 junior Sam Kobrine’s 11 points a game. Matt Ctvrtlik, a 6-4 junior reserve, is scoring 10 points a game. Bo St. Geme, a 6-foot senior point guard, and 6-3 senior Kevin Fults both average 9 points a game. For Corona del Mar, the emphasis will be on containing Beverly Hills’ 6-10 senior center Chance Comanche. “We can’t let him move around freely,” Corona del Mar coach Ryan Schachter said. “We’ll try to keep multiple bodies around him at all times.” Among Comanche’s many outstanding games was a 26-point, 17-rebound effort when the Normans defeated another CIF-SS finalist, Lawndale. Comanche signed with Arizona after weighing offers from many other schools, including UCLA and USC. He transferred before this school year to Beverly Hills from View Park Prep of Los Angeles, where he spent his junior and sophomore years after attending St. Bernard of Playa del Rey as a freshman. Top-seeded Beverly Hills had a first-round bye before beating Hoover of Glendale in the second round, Gabrielino of San Gabriel in the quarterfinals and Esperanza in the semifinals. The Normans have won 15 in a row since a loss to Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth on Jan. 10. Beverly Hills won its only CIF-SS boys basketball championship in 1969.
