ORANGE – Canyon has become all too familiar with the feeling of disappointment this season.
Those negative feelings were wiped away Friday night after Jason Harmon’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Noah White with three seconds left in the game gave the Comanches a 28-21 nonleague victory over Yorba Linda
The victory at Fred Kelly Stadium is the first of the season for the Comanches (1-6) and comes a week before they open play in the North Hills League.
“Our kids had been through a lot over the past six weeks,” Canyon coach Mike Ogas said. “I told then before the game today that it’s a four-week season and forget everything that happened in the past.
“It’s exactly what we need going into league.”
A 66-yard touchdown pass from Jake Gigliotti to Zack Sowder gave the Mustangs (3-4) a 21-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Comanches then converted a Yorba Linda fumble – the fourth of the game for the Mustangs – into a 6-yard, game-tying touchdown run from Daniel Casas.
With the score still tied,Yorba Linda had possession on its 15 with 3:12 to play.
The Mustangs could only drive to their 41 before being forced to punt.
Canyon took over on its 20 with under a minute to play.
Harmon was 3 for 3 on the final drive, including the game-winning touchdown pass.
