FULLERTON – Fullerton had talent all over the field in its nonleague game against El Dorado on Friday night at Fullerton District Stadium.
The Golden Hawks hung tough for a while, but the Indians had too many weapons and pulled away for a 34-13 victory.
Senior quarterback Andrew Tavarez completed his first seven passes for Fullerton (2-1) and wound up going 16 for 19 for 262 yards and three touchdowns.
The difference-maker, however, might have been Fullerton’s Kaene Soto, who had five receptions for 123 yards, including a 55-yard catch for the game’s first touchdown.
But the play that was the punch in the stomach to El Dorado (0-2) was Soto’s 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter.
On the previous play, El Dorado quarterback Dominick Martinez threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Wells to get the Hawks to within a touchdown.
Soto’s return put the Indians back ahead by two touchdowns, and from that point on, El Dorado never advanced into Fullerton territory.
“Kaene Soto is a special athlete,” Fullerton coach Gus Martinez said. “He’s already got one (college) offer and we expect him to get more.”
After completing just six of 14 passes in the first half, Martinez completed 14 consecutive passes in the second and finished 20-of-29 for 217 yards and a touchdown.
