Steve Fryer’s final Orange County football top 25 for the 2014 season:

1. JSerra (10-2): The Lions had a dream season, making the playoffs for the first time and winning a playoff game for the first time. Probably bigger than that, though, was beating Mater Dei for the first time.

2. Mater Dei (9-3): This team did not have enough playmakers on offense to support what was a terrific defense.

3. Santa Margarita (6-5): This team did not have enough defense to support the terrific playmakers it had on offense.

4. Servite (4-7): The Friars, fifth place in the Trinity League, would have been champion of any other county league.

5. Orange Lutheran (4-6): The Lancers lost to Pac-5 champion Centennial of Corona by three points and beat West Valley finalist Vista Murrieta by 34 points. Mission Viejo beat Vista Murrieta by 11.

6. Mission Viejo (12-2): It’s no knock on the Diablos to state they are not as good as any Trinity League team. Being the best public school team in the county and winning the championship of a challenging public-school division are splendid accomplishments.

7. Tesoro (9-3): The Titans couldn’t hang on to a 24-point halftime lead in a second-round playoff loss to Vista Murrieta. Still, there were plenty of highlights including a win over Corona del Mar that ended the Sea Kings’ 30-game winning streak.

8. Trabuco Hills (10-4): Mission Viejo was not the only team that started 0-2 then won a CIF title. These Mustangs did that, too.

9. San Clemente (12-2): The Sea View League-champion Tritons at times looked as good as Mission Viejo and Tesoro.

10. Corona del Mar (10-2): The Sea Kings’ losses were to Tesoro and Trabuco Hills, and they beat El Toro by 17 points.

11. El Toro (8-4): The high-scoring, at 38 points a game, Chargers knocked out Los Alamitos in the West Valley Division first round. They lost to Mission Viejo by seven points, and to Tesoro by nine.

12. Capistrano Valley (9-3): The Sea View League’s third-place team advanced to the Southwest semifinals.

13. Los Alamitos (9-3): The Griffins took an early exit from the playoffs, but they still had some fine moments that included going 5-0 in the Sunset League.

14. Edison (7-4): The Chargers finished second, to Los Alamitos, in the Sunset League and were eliminated by Hart of Newhall in the first round of the West Valley playoffs.

15. Buena Park (11-2): If you’re looking for a team ready to take that next big step, look toward the Coyotes who lost only to Freeway League champion La Habra and Southwest Division champion Trabuco Hills. They beat Cypress and Villa Park in playoff games.

16. Villa Park (9-3): The Spartans opened with a 63-0 loss to Mater Dei and closed with a 14-0 playoff loss to Buena Park. In between were plenty of wins and a Crestview League championship.

17. La Habra (7-4): The Highlanders, as usual, won the Freeway League championship but were knocked out by Capistrano Valley in a two-point loss in the Southwest first round.

18. Valencia (10-2): The Empire League champion was another team that fell to red-hot Capistrano Valley in the playoffs.

19. Newport Harbor (5-6): The Sunset League was not at its usual strength this season. Still, finishing third, as the Sailors did, is pretty good.

20. Cypress (8-3): The Centurions finished second in the Empire League, and would have been much lower without multi-skilled Quinten Pounds.

21. Garden Grove (13-1): The feeling here is that by the end of the season the Southern Division champion Argonauts could beat some Southwest Division playoff teams.

22. Troy (7-4): The Warriors beat North Hills League champion Canyon and Empire League champ Valencia, and lost to eventual division champ Trabuco Hills in the first round of the Southwest playoffs.

23. Huntington Beach (3-7): The Oilers are here because they beat Fountain Valley and Southeast Division finalist Downey.

24. Fountain Valley (5-5): The Barons had nonleague wins over three playoff teams, including Golden West League champion Westminster.

25. Rancho Alamitos (11-3): The Vaqueros got shut out by Garden Grove in the Southern Division final. But the Vaqs did play in December which is always good.
