Savanna's Fromknecht to retire as coach
Savanna girls basketball coach Don Fromknecht, who has been at the helm of the program for the past 15 seasons, announced this week he will retire at the conclusion of the school year.
Fromknecht, 61, led the Rebels to a 17-10 overall record and the Orange League title this past season.
“(Savanna administration) offered me a golden handshake to be perfectly honest,” the longtime coach explained. “We had a really young team that won league this past season, so maybe it’s not best time to leave, but I’m 61 now and it’s time to go. ”
Fromknecht posted a career record of 221-167 at Savanna and made the playoffs in 13 of his 15 seasons.
“The kids and the coaches were great here,” Fromknecht added. “We’re not Mater Dei or Orange Lutheran, but the kids gave us everything they had for 15 years. They had great heart and great work ethic.”
Fromknecht will also be retiring as a physical education teacher at Savanna.
His retirement plans include him spending part of each year in Montana.
“We’ll be in Montana from April to November,” he said. “We’ll be back here for the holidays and when it starts snowing. I’m done shoveling snow.”
Savanna will be accepting applications for the girls basketball coaching position. Interested applicants should contact Roger Whalen or Rick Parmenter at 714-220-4262.
