Grant Shoults helped Santa Margarita’s top-ranked boys swimming team open its season with a victory Friday.

The Stanford-bound senior captured the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly in automatic CIF Division 1 qualifying times, sending the host Eagles to a 114-56 victory against Fountain Valley.

Shoults clocked a time of 1 minute, 38.73 seconds in the 200 free and touched in 50.32 in the 100 butterfly. He owns the national private school record in the 200 free.

Marc Morizono and Alexander Qu also collected two victories. Morizono claimed the 100 free (48.67) and 500 free (4:39.62), and Qu took the 200 individual medley (2:00.85) and breaststroke (1:00.49).

Fountain Valley’s Adam Mancini prevented a sweep by the Eagles by winning the 50 free (23.11).

In girls swimming:

Santa Margarita 116, Fountain Valley 54: Freshman Mackenzie Degn won the 50 (24.68) and 100 (53.34) freestyles to help pace the host Eagles, who won 10 of 11 events. Freshman Haley Calaiacovo claimed the 200 (1:58.47) and 500 (5:12.72) freestyles.

In the Irvine City Relays:

Irvine’s girls and Northwood’s boys won titles at the Woollett Aquatics Center.
