ORANGE – Canyon came back from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit against Foothill on Friday and was less than a minute away from notching its first victory of the season.
But after Jason Harmon’s 6-yard scoring pass to Jake Owens gave the Comanches a four-point lead with 50 seconds to play, Foothill and quarterback Preston Moebius came through with some heroics of their own at Fred Kelly Stadium.
Moebius drove the Knights 68 yards on the final drive, capping it with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chris Reem on the game’s final play, giving Foothill a 23-21 nonleague victory
Foothill improved to 3-2.
“They (Canyon) pulled a couple of quick ones on us there at the end,” Foothill coach Doug Case said. “Fortunately for us, our kids stayed in it.
“They could have put their heads down and they didn’t do that. We came down and had a big play with Moebius and Reem there at the end.”
The Comanches started their comeback with a 76-yard touchdown pass from Matt Burns to Harmon on a halfback option play.
Then came the touchdown pass to Owens that gave Canyon (0-5) the lead.
Foothill took a 17-7 lead on a 22-yard field goal by Evan Mickelson, a touchdown pass from Moebius to Reems with 31 seconds left in the first half, and then a 45-yard, third-quarter touchdown pass to Jack Campbell.
Harmon completed 22 of 30 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns.
Moebius was 17 for 30 for 175 yards and three touchdowns.
“We threw the ball more tonight than we have in the whole season combined,” Case said. “For us to do what we want to do in the future, we are going to have to open it up a little bit.”
Matt Smith had an interception for Foothill, and Elliot Payne had an interception for the Comanches.
