St. Margaret's football team could set the Orange County record for consecutive victories later this year, but that's not the only record in the Tartans' sights.

This could become the highest-scoring outfit in county football history.

The county team record for single-season scoring is 651 points, set by Santa Margarita in 1997. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer was a senior in '97, as was outstanding receiver John Minardi.

St. Margaret's is averaging 48.2 points a game. If the Tartans play 14 games, which would mean an appearance in a CIF-Southern Section championship game, and continue at that pace, they would finish with 675 points.

There is the possibility, too, that a 14-0 season for St. Margaret's, which currently is 5-0, could lead to a berth in a CIF state bowl game. A 15th game could help the Tartans get the scoring record, or add to a record already in hand.

Taking a look around Orange County high school sports:

•How I voted in the county football Top 10 this week: 1. Mission Viejo; 2. Servite; 3. Edison; 4. Orange Lutheran; 5. Mater Dei; 6. Los Alamitos; 7. San Clemente; 8. Newport Harbor; 9. Esperanza; 10. Tesoro. Remember, yours truly has only one vote. There are 10 other voters.

•An explanation of my vote: While Mission Viejo has not played a schedule nearly as challenging as Servite's – and neither has anyone else – Mission Viejo likely would score enough on Servite's defense to win; Newport Harbor moved ahead of Esperanza, because Harbor beat Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach, which beat Esperanza; having seen San Clemente and Tesoro, San Clemente looks more dynamic on offense and quicker on defense.

•The county school that appears in the most of this week's fall sports CIF-SS top 10s: Corona del Mar, which is ranked if five top 10s. The Sea Kings are No. 4 in Southern Division football; No. 2 in II-AA girls volleyball; No. 8 in Division I boys water polo; No. 2 in Division I girls tennis; and No. 3 in Division III girls cross country.

•Four county football teams are No. 1 in their divisions: Fullerton, in the Southwest Division; Laguna Hills, in the Southern; Saddleback Valley Christian, in the Northeast; and St. Margaret;s in the East Valley.

•On Wednesday, there were four entries at craigslist.com that offered tickets for the Mater Dei-Servite football game, Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton.

•Pertinent information on Mater Dei-Servite: parking at Cal State Fullerton will be $5; there is no live TV of the game; I can't get you tickets; and instead of flipping out at all the attention we give in these pages and at ocvarsity.com to Mater Dei-Servite, just keep in mind that readership interest dictates our coverage of everything (I have zero tolerance of "Dancing With The Stars," but accept that many other people are into it).

•The Mission Viejo-Tesoro football game Friday is sold out. It will be televised live on FSN Prime Ticket, at 7:30 p.m.

•County football teams ranked in calhisports.com's state top 25: Mission Viejo, at No. 7; Los Alamitos; at No. 9; Servite, No. 17; Orange Lutheran, No. 21; and Edison, No. 24. Also in the California top 25: No. 1 Long Beach Poly; No. 2 Centennial of Corona (one of two teams that beat Mater Dei, Edison is the other); No. 6 St. Bonaventure (which beat Santa Margarita); No. 13 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (one of two teams to beat Servite); No. 14 Crespi of Encino (Servite's other loss); No. 20 Bishop Amat (the team that beat Orange Lutheran); and No. 23 St. John Bosco of Bellflower (the Trinity League's one Los Angeles County team).

•At the Marina-Los Alamitos game Thursday at Gahr Los Alamitos football players will wear pink gloves and money will be collected at the entrances as part of Los Alamitos' involvement in breast cancer awareness. Money collected will go to breast cancer research. You and I and everyone we know have been touched by cancer in some way.
