Canyon Relays produce fantastic finish, five records
The boys and girls team races came down to the final event.
That’s how competitive the Canyon Relays turned out Friday at Canyon.
The Brea Olinda boys and Woodbridge girls emerged from the record-setting meet with team titles.
Brea Olinda’s boys trailed Orange Lutheran, 84-82, going into the meet-ending 500-yard progressive freestyle relay and finished second in the race to finish with 94 points.
Orange Lutheran touched fourth in the final relay and finished second in the team race with 88 points.
The girls competition was even closer going into the 500 progressive. Woodbridge and Orange Lutheran were tied, 94-94, but the Warriors won the race in 4 minutes, 49.24 seconds to seal the team title with 110 points. The Lancers’ girls placed second with 106 points.
Woodbridge’s girls also set a meet-record in the 400 free relay with a 3:39.97.
The boys event produced three meet records. Woodbridge won the 500 progressive in 4:18.45, breaking Santa Margarita’s 1996 mark.
Orange Lutheran’s 200 backstroke touched first in 1:45.10, sinking the 1994 meet-record of Capistrano Valley by almost two seconds.
Canyon’s boys broke Santa Margarita’s 2003 meet standard in the 200 breaststroke with a 1:57.16.
In another sign of the meet’s speed, Brea Olinda captured the co-ed 400 free relay in a meet-record 3:18.04, edging Villa Park's 1998 standard.
