Sunny Hills found a new way to win a game in the CIF-SS boys soccer playoffs.

Usually, the Lancers’ hopes rest on a tenacious, organized defense, but on Friday, their attacking players made the difference.

Kevin Perez, Amaury Maldonado and Herminio Padilla each scored goals in the first half as the host Lancers beat Kaiser of Fontana, 3-1, in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

Miguel Tapia and Bronny Toledo provided the assists to the goals by Perez and Maldonado. Padilla converted a penalty kick in the 27th minute, which gave Sunny Hills a 3-0 lead.

The Lancers (16-3-5) will face Foothill on Wednesday in the second round. Foothill beat Laguna Hills, 2-1, in double overtime Friday.

“We attacked well and did a good job. It was a great first half for us,” Sunny Hills coach Mike Schade said. “But we need to keep attacking and keep our organization because when you start to relax you make mistakes.”

A brief defensive gaffe by Sunny Hills in the 49th minute allowed Marcus Castaneda to find plenty of space along the right side of the field, and he quickly helped Kaiser (12-7-2) trim the Lancers’ advantage to 3-1.

“He showed up and got the job done for them. I am disappointed in that,” Schade said. “We need to keep attacking and keep our organization. But we did have a great first half.”

Also in Division 2:

Santa Ana 2, Sonora 0: Oscar Navarro scored both goals for the host Saints (13-3-2).

Aliso Niguel 1, Westminster 0: Ryan Souza scored the winner for the host Wolverines (11-4-2).

In Division 4:

Godinez 2, Norwalk 1: Edgar Adame and Bryan Ibarra both scored a goal to lead the host Grizzlies (17-1-3) to victory in a first-round match.

Santiago 3, Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth 0: Israel Celis, Gio Diaz and Julio Galicia each provided a goal for the host Cavailers (16-3-4).
