FRIDAY’S PAC-5 DIVISION PLAYOFF GAMES

Second round

Centennial of Corona (9-2) vs. Mater Dei (9-2)

Where, when: Santa Ana Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

Live coverage: foxsports.com/west/prepzone

Outlook: These teams played each other in Week 0. Mater Dei won, 38-18. The Huskies’ other loss was by one point, 43-42, to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, the No. 1 team in some national rankings. The Huskies beat Orange Lutheran, 52-49, and Long Beach Poly, 42-34, in nonleague games before going 5-0 in the Big VIII League. Centennial, which has won seven CIF-SS football championships under Coach Matt Logan, is averaging 48 points a game while allowing more than 30 a game. The Huskies, employing a no-huddle offense with interchanging quarterbacks, beat Serra of Gardena last week by the basketball-like score of 68-64. Nate Ketteringham threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns and Anthony Catalano threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns. Javon McKinley had 13 receptions for 213 yards and four touchdowns and returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. Mater Dei, which finished third in the Trinity League and has five CIF-SS titles under Coach Bruce Rollinson, defeated Westlake of Westlake Village, 28-7, in the first round. Defense has been the Monarchs’ strong suit all season, and it will have to be against Centennial. Mater Dei defensive end Malik McMorris had a sack and recovered two fumbles against Westlake, and Gerran Brown returned an interception for a touchdown. The Centennial-Mater Dei winner plays the Bishop Amat-JSerra winner in next week’s semifinals. The Monarchs are 5-1 at Santa Ana Stadium this season.

Bishop Amat of La Puente (8-3) vs. JSerra (10-1)

Where, when: Saddleback College, 7:30 p.m.

Live coverage: foxsports.com/west/prepzone

Outlook: Bishop Amat finished in a three-way tie, with Crespi of Encino and Serra, for first place in the Mission League. After losing to Crespi by one point in overtime in the league opener, the Lancers have won six in a row, including a 47-18 win over Lakewood in the first round last week. Lancers junior quarterback Ryder Ruiz completed his first 11 passes against Lakewood and finished with 457 passing yards and four touchdowns. It already has been an historic season for JSerra and Jim Hartigan, a leading candidate for Orange County coach of the year. The Lions beat Mater Dei for the first time, made the playoffs for the first time and got their first playoff win last week in a 55-16 triumph over Santiago of Corona. Edward Vander rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Isaiah Diego-Williams returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. It could be a high-scoring game. JSerra has proven it can match points with the better teams in Southern California.
