COSTA MESA – After going winless in its nonleague games, Costa Mesa bounced back in a big way by routing Laguna Beach, 48-0, in the Orange Coast League opener Friday at Estancia High.

Behind its run-heavy offense, Costa Mesa (1-5, 1-0) raced to a 41-0 halftime lead. Its defense was impressive, limiting Laguna Beach (1-5, 0-1) to 68 yards of offense in the first half.

The Mustangs set the tone early. On the second play from scrimmage, Cameron Curet took the end around and raced to the end zone 85 yards untouched for a 7-0 lead.

On his team’s first defensive series, Curet got involved on the that side of the ball, deflecting a pass from Laguna Beach quarterback Jack Simon that fell into the hands of teammate Darmonta Davis for the interception.

Curet’s 28-yard run set up the first of two Mason Mataafa touchdowns, a 3-yard score extending the lead to 14-0.

Mataafa ended the night with 87 yards on 13 carries.

Curet topped off an impressive first half with a 13-yard touchdown reception from Sam Swanson with 12 seconds left in the quarter. Curet finished the game with 174 yards on 10 carries.

Mustangs junior Michael Dias had two TDs.
