NORWALK – Forgive Servite for wanting to show an old friend what he was missing out on.
The old friend being La Mirada receiver/defensive back Tony Brown, who played for the Friars last season.
Servite wasted little time letting Brown know who the better team was on Friday, as it jumped out to a three-touchdown lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 56-14 victory against La Mirada in a nonleague game at Cerritos College.
“There was a lot of motivation,” Friars quarterback Travis Waller said of playing his former teammate. “We wanted to make it a reason as to why he shouldn’t have left. We love Tony so much … but come game time, he’s the enemy.”
No. 2 Servite (2-1) and Waller came out swinging in the first quarter. Waller accounted for two first-quarter scores, a 13-yard pass to sophomore receiver Terrell Bynum, and a 23-yard touchdown run.
Special teams hasn’t been the Friars’ strong suit this season, but Bynum gave that unit a spark with a 38-yard punt return that set Servite up with a short field for an eventual short touchdown march in the first quarter.
Waller connected with Osiris St. Brown for a 41-yard score to put the Friars up, 28-0, midway through the second.
The Oregon-bound quarterback had a big all-around performance as he was 14-of-19 passing for 157 yards and two scores, while rushing for 98 yards and another score.
The highlight of the night came from Servite defensive back Maurice Davison, who picked off La Mirada quarterback Christian Lara near the end zone, cut back across the field and outran the rest of the Matadores’ offense for a 98-yard TD.
Even though La Mirada (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, Brown was able to make his presence felt. He caught six passes for 106 yards, and his 71-yard reception in the third quarter gave the Matadores their first score and brought them within 35-7.
It was Servite’s first win at Cerritos College since last season’s game against Orange Lutheran, which they won on a Hail Mary. The Friars had lost three consecutive games at Cerritos dating back to last year.
The Friars will square off against undefeated Edison next week. The Chargers are averaging 45 points per game through three games this season.
