MISSION VIEJO – Fountain Valley proved to be the right elixir for Trabuco Hills’ offensive woes Friday night.
Led by Chad Crosbie’s 158 yards rushing and two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Jimmy Jacobs, the Mustangs rolled to a 28-7 victory over the Barons in a nonleague game at Trabuco Hills High.
The Mustangs (1-2), who had scored just seven points in their first two games of the season against Rancho Cucamonga and La Costa Canyon, exceeded that mark in the first quarter as they reached the end zone in their first two possessions.
“Even though we lost our first two games, I was confident in our staff and the kids,” said Tony Henney, who recorded his first victory as the Mustangs coach. “We played well tonight, but I feel we’re only going to get better.”
Trabuco Hills’ offensive line of Tony Burge, David Stobbe, Ulysses Gaytan, Sean Brewer and Austin Fine dominated Fountain Valley’s front, leading to a season-best 258 yards rushing on 50 carries.
“That front line had us standing up and looking around all night long,” said Barons coach Ray Fenton. “They took it to us on both sides of the ball.”
Trabuco Hills took a 7-0 lead with 7:22 left in the first on a 5-yard touchdown run by Noah Thompson out of the Wildcat formation.
After a second consecutive 3-and-out by the Barons (2-1), the Mustangs marched 48 yards on seven plays, the last play a 1-yard touchdown run by Crosbie.
Ahead, 14-7, in the second quarter, Trabuco Hills capped off an 80-yard, 10-play drive when Jacobs found Oregon-bound Jacob Breeland in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown reception.
